G20 Summit 2023 Day 1 Live: In his inaugural address at the G20 Summit on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the group “will have to look at concrete solutions to terrorism, climate change, supply chains and cyber security.” He also proposed African Union to be part of the G20. The first session of the G20 Summit —One Earth — will begin shortly. What else is expected today? The G20 leaders are expected to announced the Global Biofuel Alliance on Day 1 of the Summit today. Chairperson of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Mittal told CNBTV18, “It signals that you cannot leave large continents like Africa behind. They have to be part of the main table, a part of the decision making process and they need to part of the forums that decide the new world order…Africa will now have a voice.”
“One of the major areas of focus will be Africa’s development. Africa is endowed with mineral deposits, used in renewable energy, electric vehicles. Taking minerals out of Africa is not healing the continent. Africa needs manufacturing, supply chain to make Africa more resilient 65 percent of world’s uncultivated land lies in Africa, needs work for food security.”
He added, “Countries like Zambia which had massive Copper deposits have fallen into huge debt traps. Oil producing countries like Gabon also in huge debt, this needs a reset. Debate must ensue on how to write off these loans. Due to large debt from China, Africa has been deprived of continuous income to build their own infra.”

Bloomberg reported on Saturday that “diplomats from the Group of 20 nations have hammered out compromise language on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, overcoming differences between Moscow and the rest of the group that had threatened to derail hopes of a joint communique from this weekend’s summit”. It added that the phrasing is broadly similar to that agreed at last year’s summit in Bali, Indonesia, according to people familiar with the discussions. They asked not to be identified to describe internal deliberations”.
